A birthday cake is supposed to be the centerpiece, not the size of your palm. But one Belizean woman is going viral after calling out local business Custom Cupcakes Belize, claiming she paid a jaw-dropping price for a cake that could barely survive a single hand comparison. Now the internet is divided between admiring the aesthetic and side-eyeing the price tag.

How Much was the Cake?

Everyone knows splurging for your birthday is common. Hair, nails, outfits, venues, even the cake. However, Leeyah (@its_just_leeyah) didn’t expect this much of a splurge for her 21st birthday cake. Her clip calling out the store now has 78,000 viewers with comments comparing it with their own much cheaper birthday cakes.

The clip begins with Leeyah saying that it’s her birthday as she shows off her nails, outfit, and makeup. She says everything is “tea,” even her cake. She flips the camera, and a pink, white, and light blue heart-shaped cake is shown. She then goes on to say, “unu see dat cake? Unu know how much I pay fi dat cake? $240.”

Leeyah continues, calling it “beautiful,” but says the size is definitely lacking. One of her male friends places his hand above the cake as a comparison, and it fits directly. Meaning she paid $240 for a cake not even bigger than the size of a man’s palm.

“The size of that cake is ridiculous for $240,” says Leeyah. She then name-drops the place: Customs Cupcakes Belize. Lastly, she emphasizes that there’s not even much cake, since most of it is frosting and icing. “Anyways, let me be grateful,” she concludes. “We nuh rich, my ma nuh rich. $240 and my ma had fi pay fi dat.”

Was it Too Expensive for a Cake? Bakers Chime In

Most of Leeyah’s viewers seem to agree that the price was too high. Many add their own photos for comparison, and with the prices they had paid. Many of the photos feature bigger cakes of all different types of designs, and none comes close to the price Leeyah had to pay. Many acknowledge how this misrepresents bakers.

One viewer shares a picture they made for a customer. “Remember guys when pricing a cake, we bakers need to add up price for everything,” they explain. “For example this cake carried 3½ pages(edible image), cherries with glitters, customized topper, glitters, flavor was tres leches and cake size was 10inch double layer..and it add up to $195…..i feel my prices are fair…but i do know some bakers do charge extremely high prices.”

Another baker also chimes in with their own creation. “Price also depends on adds on like edible pictures, bows or the amount of fondant you like. Bakers don’t grab the habit of trying to take advantage of people, this creates not only a bad imagine on that business but also to all bakers.”

In between the sea of comments, Leeyah only has one viewer that doesn’t think she was scammed. “That is worth it, your paying for labour, ingredients and the professional look,” the viewer says.

Others are as indignant as Leeyah is. “O wow that’s insane,” says one viewer. “Uno get scam fi true smh.”

Another complains, “You could mi get wah biggg rasssss richhh tres leche cake from la popular bakery or even any other kind anyhow Happy birthday hunnie the scamma they active.”

“I woulda feel a typa way too I hate when my ma spend too much money pan sumn weh nuh worth it,” shares a third viewer. Another claims, “you one kuh eat dah cake.”

One viewer questions, “They didn’t even tell you measurements of the cake before?”
