One American traveler’s great Belize vacation ended on a sour note after she arrived at the Philip Goldson Airport and saw her Spirit Airlines flight pulling out. Now, she’s blaming Maya Island Air for ending up stranded in Belize.
In a now-viral TikTok, she claims a string of “weather delays” grounded her flight while other planes were still taking off. This triggered a domino effect that left her stranded in Belize, missing multiple connections, and footing the bill for a brand-new ticket herself.
No hotel, no rebooking, no help—just a very expensive lesson and a warning she wants every American traveler to hear.
Yonnie (@_amorprincess) is saying it loud and clear for her current 37,000 viewers. Her clip on TikTok has a bright red text overlay with a large font, saying, “DO NOT FLY WITH THEM!!!!!!!!”
As she videos the check-in counter of the Maya Air Island at Phillip Goldson International Airport, she shares a bit more information. She is adamantly warning viewers not to fly with the airline unless “you wanna miss your flight and have to pay extra money just to get home.”
Her caption has the full story. Apparently, the first issue was due to the weather, with Maya Island Air claiming that their planes couldn’t take off due to the rain. They said it would only be a 30-45-minute delay, when in actuality, they had passengers waiting for two hours.
Yonnie says Tropic Air had flights still coming and going despite all this. The second excuse was that they couldn’t fuel the plane. All the commotion caused Yonnie to miss her following Spirit Airlines flight back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Because there weren’t any other flights until Friday, she had to book a completely new flight with a new airline.
Despite this, Maya Island Air allegedly refused to pay for anything: Not the flight she missed with them, not her other missed flights, nor the hotel she had to book at the last minute. Worst of all, she claims the customer service rep hung up on her when she asked for the manager. Lastly, she says, “Especially if your American they automatically assume we have so much money to just be wasting on flights n hotels over and over!”
In an interview with Deep Scroll, Yonnie assured that she loved Belize and had a wonderful vacation apart from the Maya Island fiasco. She admits her TikTok was made after being frustrated with the airline and says she could’ve explained things better.
“I understand things happen and nothing is perfect, but I do expect a certain level of professionalism when I’m spending my money,” Yonnie says. She adds that Maya Island did try to help in certain ways. However, the overall experience “left me stressed and paying more out of pocket than I expected.”
Yonnie continues, “I really just wanted to share my experience so people traveling to Belize can be aware and make informed decisions.” While she didn’t expect her video to get that much attention, she wants to highlight that she understands “both sides.”
Yonnie reveals she “was definitely upset” and made the TikTok at the airport. This was right after getting hung up on by Maya Island Air customer service.
“Coming in on Friday, my Spirit flight into Belize was delayed, which caused me to miss my Maya flight. I didn’t have protection with Maya, so I was fully expecting to have to pay to rebook, but they actually put me on another flight at no cost, so I do want to give them credit for that,” she says.
However, problems arose when she was leaving. As mentioned previously, the weather conditions caused a two-hour delay, and she was forced to miss her Spirit return flight. This left Yonnie stranded in Belize for several more days than planned.
“I did have protection with Spirit, so I could’ve been rebooked. But that still would’ve come with unexpected expenses and a lot of inconvenience,” she adds. “Because of that, I felt like there could’ve been some type of accommodation or support, especially knowing how limited the flights are. Even partial help, like assistance with a hotel, would’ve made a big difference.”
The TikToker laments the airline’s customer service, which she says played a big role.
“Being hung up on added to my frustration, and I probably wouldn’t have reacted the way I did if that interaction had gone differently,” she says.
“Overall, I understand things happen and I’m not expecting perfection, especially traveling somewhere new and navigating smaller regional flights. I really did enjoy Belize,” she reassures. “I just wanted to share my experience so others can be aware and prepared in case something like this happens.”
It seems Yonnie isn’t the only one with a bad Maya Island Air experience.
One viewer shares, “… I just flew maya last week to and from dangriga. Both times my flight was delayed over an hour and they barely said anything to update us. We just had to keep going to the counter and asking where the plane was. Even then they weren’t giving us accurate information. The only reason we didn’t miss our flight from Belize city to the US is because we gave ourselves ample timing when booking our flight back to Belize City…”
Others choose to praise Tropic Air amidst all the drama. One viewer shares, “Maya air gotten worse over the years. Tropic pan top big dawggg.”
Similarly, a second one says, “I’ve honestly been to Maya but compared to tropic their costumer service will never top tropics.. everything tropic is so much more professional and well done.”
Finally, one viewer asks Yonnie if she ever got any kind of refund. She replies, “& that’s my main issue like we didn’t pay no little bit of money. Also $200 for a 30-minute round trip on a small plane (not complaining) and I’m suppose to be ok with them being a ‘small airline’ no at least give me half my money back. Or they could’ve even paid for our hotel room since we had to stay an extra day! I would’ve been happy with any form of accommodation.”
