Thinking about trading traffic jams and rising rent for turquoise water and a slower pace of life? You’re not alone. From retirees to remote workers, more Americans are packing up and heading south. Unsurprisingly, Belize keeps landing at the top of the list. Here’s why you could move here, too.
Before anyone gets any anxieties about moving to a country in Latin America, feel safe knowing Belize bears no language barriers. There is absolutely no need for awkward translation apps, unlike going to Europe or even to other countries neighboring Belize. It is the only country in Central America where English is the official language. Legal documents, real estate contracts, grocery stores, government offices–it’s all in English. That makes moving, buying property, and settling in significantly smoother for Americans.
The number one worry is always finance, but not when moving here. Belize’s dollar is pegged to the U.S. dollar at 2 BZD to 1 USD, and that rate has remained stable for decades. That predictability is huge. Americans earning in USD (especially retirees or remote workers) often find their money stretches further, particularly outside of major expat hubs.
Belize is known for its “go slow” attitude. Life moves at a different pace, especially when surrounded by ample natural beauty and easy camaraderie. The culture is a vibrant mix of Creole, Mestizo, Garifuna, Maya, and expat influences. Community matters here, and many Americans say they feel welcomed quickly.
As previously mentioned, Belize’s natural beauty is a big part of its charm. Even better, it’s easily accessible, both to locals and visitors. Direct flights from cities like Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, and Atlanta make it easy to visit and move. There’s no need to stress about moving one’s entire life an ocean away. If the return is needed–such as for family or stateside business–you can get back just as easily.
Since tourism is such a big part of Belize’s economy, it’s no wonder many fall in love and choose to stay. Some have figured out how to be digital nomads, and you can find out here if you apply too. Or, if you’re already retired, you can check to see if you qualify under Belize’s Qualified Retired Person program.
