Belize doesn’t exactly shut down during the slow season, but parts of the country do take a little breather. As visitor numbers dip during certain months, some hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and other businesses temporarily close their doors. For travelers, that can mean fewer crowds, better deals, and a quieter side of Belize. However, it can also mean arriving at your dream spot only to discover it’s taking a seasonal break. Here’s what to know about Belize’s slow season, why these brief closures happen, and how to plan around them.

When is Belize’s slow season?

While Belize hosts tourists year-round, some months naturally see fewer visitors. Belize’s slow season runs from June through mid-November. Many visitors prefer to come during winter in their home countries, since Belize offers a warm respite even in December and January. This means that the summer months have half the crowds in places like San Pedro, Placencia, and Caye Caulker. September especially is the slowest month.

Are there reasons to visit Belize during slow season?

Aside from fewer crowds, visiting Belize during its slow season can be quite beneficial. During these months, hotels and resorts offer more discounts. So not only would you definitely get the room you’re hoping for, you’d get it for cheaper, too. Furthermore, these summer months hold the country’s biggest festivities. September in particular is chock-full of patriotic nationwide celebrations from St. George’s Caye Day to Independence Day and all its carnivals.

Not all the celebrations are nation-focused. In July, Belize undergoes its much-awaited Lobster Fest in San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Placencia. Further down south, Toledo has a Chocolate Festival in May. All these activities make for an all-encompassing cultural experience, one you would miss if you hadn’t skipped slow season.

Which places close during Belize’s slow season?

Since there’s less foot traffic, some businesses choose to close for a few weeks during the summer. It gives them time to go on vacations, take some time to recoup, and save money during the months whee barely any visitors come. Most of these are on Ambergris Caye, but the mainland is not exempt.

Should you visit Belize during the slow season?

Many tourists are concerned when hearing about the closures. While missing out on fan-favorites are a bummer, it doesn’t mean the entire country is closed. Inland and off-shore tours still run throughout the year. Furthermore, plenty resorts and hotels stay open; for example, The Lodge at Chaa Creek, The Rainforest Lodge at Sleeping Giant, Black Rock Lodge, and The Lodge at Jaguar Reef.

Before making flight decisions, call all the businesses beforehand to check if they’ll be open during your visit. It’s always a good idea to visit during the slow season to keep the tourism sector flowing. Many businesses take quite a hit during these months. If you’re not convinced yet, a visit during the slow season means you’ll get more personalized treatment. Resorts and tours will have more time to craft an experience catered only to you, considering they have the time and space to do so.
