Belize’s natural beauty makes it easy to see why people flock to its waterfalls, rivers and jungle. Yet, two men say there’s one thing ruining the view: the trash left behind. In a TikTok filmed at Monkey Falls, the pair issued a blunt PSA to Belizeans. In it, piles of litter decorate the site. The men also assert it is becoming a common sight not only there but at other popular spots around the country. Their message? “Don’t be lame, man.” Rather than simply complain, they’re now calling on locals to join a community cleanup.
Abraham Heavener and friend Scadett uploaded a minute-long TikTok with the text overlay reading: “PSA to my people of Belize.” Currently, the video has over 22,000 views and almost 50 comments. It begins with the pair identifying themselves and saying they need to present something to everyone. A text overlay reveals the location as Monkey Falls, and the camera pans to show piles of trash at the very entrance. Scadett gestures towards it and says it’s “really disappointing.”
“I love Belize because of all this,” Abraham says, gesturing toward the nature. “Not because of that,” he says, pointing to the garbage. He then says that this isn’t just the case with Monkey Falls. He alleges that it’s “many different sites of Belize.” The pair walk through the area and highlight all the trash, which seems to be mostly made up of plastic food wrappers.
The two men then propose an idea to combat all the rubbish found at Monkey Falls. They schedule a community-led cleanup at Monkey Falls on October 5th at 1 p.m. Abraham urges viewers to bring friends and share with other locals and suggests everyone can hang out afterwards. Scadett encourages volunteers to take gloves, bags, and, if possible, a vehicle to cart all the trash away. The TikTok’s caption simply says, “Don’t be lame man. It’s on us, Belize.”
As Abraham said, Monkey Falls isn’t the only place littered with rubbish. In the comment section, viewers share their own experiences with trash at popular tourist spots. One viewer says, “Neem a lie chat, some a WE nasty. Gan da rio on pools recently, and they so nasty now.”
Another shares, “There’s was lots of rubbish there last time I went and a nappy in the water, will try to join on the 5th.”
A third viewer states, “It’s everywhere, every place we went was full of litter! Unfortunately Belize doesn’t seem to care. The rivers right off the Hummingbird are worse! Will it change?”
Many viewers share their own disappointment and shame. A viewer says, “it’s the locals bro we gotta take better care of what’s ours.”
A second one asserts, “Cause even if it was a foreigner that left their trash why YOU a local cyant pick it up? We can do better!”
Lastly, one says, “Great initiative guys. This isn’t something new, everyone knows people are pigs. I hope this videos goes viral.”
