Usually travelers spend weeks planning an international getaway. One New York man apparently decided five minutes before landing was plenty of time to figure things out.

He had no itinerary, no destination, and barely any time left in the air. Then he turned to a complete stranger on his flight and asked the one question that mattered: where do I go? The stranger’s answer was simple: Head for the islands.

So, with little more than a recommendation from someone he had just met, he decided to take the advice and go to Caye Caulker. Sometimes the best travel stories start with a meticulously planned itinerary. Other times, they start with asking a stranger where to go before the wheels touch down.

What Happened on this Flight to Belize?

This New Yorker decided to leave the Big Apple and venture down south to tiny Belize. James (@worldofscud) is currently logging his Central American travel adventures on TikTok. His very first clip immediately gained interest, and it so happens to be about his arrival in Belize.

The clip is less than a minute long, but the spontaneity captured the attention of over 35,000 viewers. In the video, James is still in-flight, sharing with viewers that they’re about five minutes away from landing.

However, “I have no hostel booked. Nothing’s booked,” James says. “I don’t know where the [expletive] I’m going in Belize.” Even worse? He has to fly out of Guatemala in three weeks. Without warning, James turns to his seatmates.

What Do People Recommend for a Trip to Belize?

The unsuspecting woman sitting to his right is surprised when James asks her where he should go. Her reply is not of great help: “I don’t know, I’ve never been to Belize,” she says.

James switches tactics and turns to his other seatmate, a young man who tells him to just go to the first bar. Unimpressed, James asks a man sitting across the aisle. The man also agrees on a bar, but James is adamant about getting a place recommendation.

Finally, the first person he asked, the woman, pipes in and suggests San Pedro. The stranger in the aisle agrees, telling James to “hit the islands.” Once someone mentions the actual name Caye Caulker, James’ face lights up.

“I’m going to [expletive] Caye Caulker,” he tells the camera and ends the clip.

Traveling to Belize: Do You Need To Book Beforehand?

Now, James’ love for spontaneity might be exciting, but not always advised. One can do both when planning a trip to Belize. The important part is always the accommodations. Belize is diverse and has many different types of villas, hotels, and resorts, but if you’re looking for a specific kind of stay, it’s recommended to book beforehand. Despite what type of vacation you’re seeking, it’s always a good idea to look into a country’s high and low season.

In Belize, the peak time to visit is from December to April. This is likely because from June to November, Belize experiences its rainy season. In addition, most tourists come from countries experiencing harsh winters, so a warm Christmas getaway is always welcomed. James seems to have visited in July, a month when not many tourists visit, given the heat and rain. However, if he had arrived during Lobster Fest week, his luck might not have worked.

Activities You Can Book Once Arriving in Belize

When looking at excursions, one can be more loose with planning. In Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye, snorkeling trips in Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley come in troves. Securing a tour on the same day is quite common and doesn’t require booking beforehand. The same applies on the mainland for tours to Maya ruins like Xunantunich, Altun Ha, Caracol, etc. Belize has many hidden wonders that are amazing to stumble upon. Once you’ve got your home base, you can get anywhere.
