Dining with an ocean view sounds idyllic. Dining in the ocean? It sounds even better except… one unexpected guest decides you’re on the menu. That’s what happened to one tourist visiting San Pedro’s Blue Bayou, where guests can enjoy their meals with their feet in the sea. Instead of a peaceful lunch, she says a baby jellyfish latched onto her. Now she’s warning viewers before they end up like her. The most shocking part? She tried an odd remedy and she claims it worked.

What Happened at Blue Bayou?

Blue Bayou is well-renowned for its in-water tables, where guests can enjoy their meals while sitting in the ocean. It seems the Simmons couple (@the.simmons.plus) were simply trying to see what all the hype is about and instead ended up with a more complicated experience than imagined. Their clip has over 50,000 views and 70 comments. The text overlay reads: “thought i was going to enjoy my meal in the ocean, but the baby jellyfish decided he wanted to eat me instead. Blue Bayou in Belize enter at your own risk!”

Not only does the clip show the set up Blue Bayou has for its in-water tables, but lo and behold, in a clear plastic cup, the jellyfish is held captive. It definitely seems small and could be even labeled as ‘cute.’ However, the TikTok creator’s situation was anything but. In their caption, they share, “Came for the crystal-clear water, left as a baby jellyfish’s appetizer. Belize, you definitely gave me a vacation story I’ll never forget!”

Are Jellyfish Common in Belize?

As any Caribbean country, Belize’s sea houses a myriad of sea animals, both harmless and dangerous. While it holds no weight to those of Australia, one should be aware of the different types of jellyfish Belize has. The two main types are the Moon jellyfish and the Stinging jellyfish. Other people cite Thimble jellyfish, which are difficult to identify but don’t deliver a harsher sting than that of a mosquito bite. As a rule of thumb, tourists and locals are advised to avoid coming in contact with any type, even if they’re labeled as “harmless.” Another tip is to swim with a wet suit or buy jellyfish-repellant sunscreen. This advice was also given to the TikTok creator via comment and many other viewers also swear by it.

What Did She Do After Getting Stung?

As per tradition when it comes to jellyfish stings, viewers quickly claimed that someone needed to urinate on the sting. However, Cleveland Clinic adamantly claims that under no circumstances, one should treat a jellyfish sting with urine. In fact, it could even make it worse. But what did the TikTok creator do? In response to a comment telling her someone should pee on the sting, she replies, “I heard that was a thing, but nobody peed on someone actually just put Tabasco from a cigarette and Benadryl spray on me and I was good.”

What Should You Actually Do After Getting Stung by a Jellyfish?

Nowhere in its article does Cleveland Clinic mention tobacco. However, they do mention anti-histamines. Their advice is to first remove any barbs that the jellyfish might have left on your skin. Then, one should apply rubbing alcohol or vinegar to the sting. After taking a hot shower or soaking in a hot bath, you can apply anti-histamine creams like calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream. This helps with the swelling and itching. It’s likely that was the reason the creator was also given Benadryl. Lastly, if the pain worsens, one should go to the hospital.
